The best solution for curable diseases mentioned in general medicine is elimination therapy i.e. panchakarma, the unique specialty of Ayurveda. To practice this therapeutic techniques one must possess sufficient theoretical as well as practical knowledge, otherwise they may come across many complications in their practice. Panchakarma promotes detoxification and rejuvenation. It will help to remove the excess doshas and correct imbalances in them as well as eliminate the harmful ama (toxins/ waste matters) out of the body systems.

Charaka classified panchakarma as 

  • Vamana Karma
  • Virechana Karma
  • Astapana Vasti
  • Anuvasana Vasti
  • Nasya Karma

In Susruta Samhitha, Rakta Mokshana is added to the above by clubbing both Vasti Karmas as one. So that the number five remains the same.

Panchakarma performed in 3 stages

  1. Poorva Karma (Pre-operative procedure)
  2. Pradhana Karma (Operative procedure)
  3. Paschat Karma (Post Operative procedure)

 

Poorva Karma

It is important to prepare the body before starting the panchakarma procedures. So we are adopting deepana-pachana, snehana, Swedana as pre operative procedure.

  • Deepana-pachana karma

As per Ayurveda Agni (digestive fire) is the root cause of all diseases. So maintaining Agni is one of the criteria for health. For which deepana-pachana (digestive) medicines are giving to enhance the power of digestion in different levels and digests the toxic substances in the body.

  • Snehana Karma

 Applying and ingesting unctuous substances(oil, ghee etc) in order to loosen and mobilize the accumulated toxins (ama) .This include abyanga (oil massage)  and snehapanam (internal intake of fatty substances) .

  • Swedana Karma

Swedana Karma is the procedure which is used to induce sweating with or without the use of heat and always follows on from an snehana treatment. It liquifies the doshas,clears the obstruction of channels of circulation.It cures stiffness, coldness  and heaviness.

Pradhana Karma

There are five types of main operative procedures, which are popularly known as Panchakarma.

1. Vamana karma

Expulsion of vitiated doshas through mouth is termed as vamana or emesis. Here the medicine is administered through mouth and the vitiated doshas are also expelled through the same route. It is specially  indicated to cure Kapha dosha related diseases.

2. Virechana Karma

Expulsion of doshas through rectum is known as purgation. Here the medicine is being administered through mouth and doshas will expel through rectum.It is especially good for pitta Dasha, it cleanses the pitta and purifies the blood.

3. Vasti Karma

Administration of medicated oils or decoctions into the rectum with the help of urinary bladder of animals such as goat,sheep,buffalo,deer,pig etc is known as vastikarma. Hera the drug is administered through the rectum and the vitiated doshas will be expelled through the same route. It mainly divided into 2. They are snehavasti and kashaya vast. In snehavasthi medicated oils  and in kashaya vasti medicated decoctions are using. This Ayurveda treatment in Kerala mainly focuses on the elimination of vitiated  cats and body toxins.

4. Nasya karma

Administration of medicated oils, juices etc through the nostrils is known as nasyakarma.Therapy highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head. It also enhances the activities of sense organs.

5. Rakthamoksham

Expulsion of vitiated blood from the body is known as raktamokshanam. It can be done by means of srnga(horn), jaluka (leech),alabu(fruit),siravedha etc.

Paschat Karma

It means post–operative procedure.It is the adoption of rehabilitative measures after the panchakarma treatments. It involves restrictions in diet and lifestyle.
