Ayurvedic Approach For Menopause

Hormones play an important role in our life. According to Ayurveda, perimenopause period is termed as Rajo nivritti kala. Raja means menstruation, nivritti means cessation & kala means time period.

Symptoms include backache, headache, hot flashes,mood swings,excess or decreased appetite, loss of sleep, disturbed sleep, vaginal dryness, lower sex drive, palpitation, anxiety, depression etc.

Most of symptoms are all symptoms of disturbed vata. All three doshas vata, pitta & kapha are always present in the body, their predominance changes according to the season, age, time of the day & individual particular body constitution. Here, we will concentrate on age. In Ayurveda, menopausal age is the transition from the pitta stage to vata stage of life. So here in this age we can see dominance of vata and pitta.

When treatment is required? When not?

  • Knowledge about present stage and awareness is very essential.
  • If symptoms are mild , then manage with life style symptoms.
  • In severe symptoms treatment is required

Herbal Supplements:

Herbal supplements

  • ½ tsp Ashwagandha powder
  • ½ tsp Shatavari powder
  • ½ tsp vidari powder
  • ¼ tsp Ginger powde

Combine the powders with honey & make into paste . Take twice daily for 3-6 months:

  • 1 cup Organic milk
  • 10 strands Saffron thistles
  • ½ tsp Shatavari powder
  • 1 tsp ghee

Drink this before bed for a period of 3-6 months:

  • 1 tsp Triphala powder
  • ½ tsp Flax seed powder
  • ½ tsp Cuminseed powder

Combine the powders & addit in ½ glass of warm water and take this once or twice a day to relieve constipation or gastric problems:

  • 1/2tsp Brahmi powder
  • 1/2tsp Shatavari powder
  • ½ tsp  Aswagandha powder

Mix these powders with 1 cup of organic milk &  take this before bed. It acts as a nervine tonic , which is good for anxiety, depression etc

  • 1 tsp Fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp Coriander seeds

Add it with 1 glass of water & keep it overnight. Next day filter it and take this water in empty stomach to reduce hot flashes.

Diet & Lifestyle:

Diet & Lifestyle

  • A diet rich in calcium like green leafy vegetables, cabbage, soya food, okra, beans, almonds, sesame seeds, flaxseeds.
  • Iron rich foods like cooked beans, cereals, pumpkin seeds, carrot, dates, chickpeas, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, raisins, peaches, prunes, spinach.
  • Include healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, omega-3 & omega-6 rich foods like mackerel, salmon, tuna etc .
  • Follow regular meal times in quiet pleasing environment.
  • Favour warm, cooked vegetables , cooked cereals & soups over crunchy dry foods and boiled water.
  • Proper exercise, yoga, meditation & healthy habits help to keep the hormone levels balanced.
  • Maintain healthy weight.
  • Use sugar & salt in moderation.

Avoid:

Avoid

  • Avoid vegetable oils, peanut oils, margarine.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake.
  • Avoid deep fried, excess spicy & sour, oily, junk food items.
