Benefits of Panchakarma

Panchakarma, the five modes of purification is the unique specialty of Ayurveda. It is the best solution for cleansing or detoxifying the body as mentioned in Ayurveda. The 5 purification procedures are Vamana (Emesis), Virechana (Purgation), Vasti (Enema), Nasya (Instillation of medicine through nostril) & Raktamokshana (Blood letting). These are specially designed five procedures of internal purification of the body through the nearest possible route.There are horde of benefits of Panchakarma. Panchakarma permits the biological system to return to normalcy & to rejuvenate rapidly & also facilitates the desired pharmacokinetic & therapeutic effects of medicines administered thereafter. It has a full therapy role as promotive, preventive & curative procedure.

The benefits of panchakarma is not merely for purification therapy, but it also has wider range of therapeutics such as Brimhana (nourishing), Lekhana (scrapping), Stambhana (stiffening), Rasayana (rejuvenative), Vrishya (aphrodisiac) etc. Besides the application in treatment of diseases, they are also used as preparatory measures before surgery, administration of the rejuvenation therapy, aphrodisiac therapy and internal administration of mercurial & metallic preparations. It is perhaps the most misunderstood of all the Ayurveda practices and is often perceived as another system of oil massage by ignorance.

The treatment order goes like: Poorva karma (Pre operative procedures) including Deepana- Pachana (Digestive & Carminative), Snehana (Oleation) & Swedana (Sudation). Pradhana karma (Operative procedures) includes Vamana, Virechana, Niruha vasti, Anuvasana vasti & Nasya. Paschat karma (Post operative procedures) includes Samsarjana karma (Dietory restriction), Rasayanadi karma (Rejuvinative therapy) & Shamana prayoga (Palliative therapy). Susruta included Raktamokshana (Blood letting) under Pradhana Karma & merged Niruha & Anuvasana into one as Vasti. Peyadi Samsarjana karma is included under Paschat karma. Treatments in Panchakarma

Before we learn more about the benefits of Panchakarma, here is a brief of each treatment in Panchakarma.

1. Vaman:

An internal and external oleation and fomentation treatment is given to the patient for some days. This treatment is a mix of ayurvedic medicines together with some natural therapies. This causes toxins within to get melted and get accumulated in the upper cavities. After this phase the patient is given decoction and emetic medicine that cause vomiting enabling to eliminate toxins out of the body cells. This Vaman treatment is particularly best for kapha-dominated conditions, such as weight gain, asthma and hyperacidity.

2. Virechan:

Virechan

Here in Virechan, purgation or disposal of toxins occurs through cleansing of the bowels. Like Vaman here the patient is given both inside and outside oleation and fomentation treatments as well. Then the patient is given natural purgative that which encourage clearing of the guts and helps in washing-off the body of toxins. This type of treatment is prescribed for pitta -dominated conditions, such as herpes zoster, jaundice , colitis, celiac infection etc.

3. Basti:

This treatment is particularly helpful in chronic diseases. Depending on the nature of disease, home grown decoctions, oils, ghee or milk are managed. According to the nature of disease, home grown decoctions, oils, ghee or milk is induced into the rectum which shows up incredible positive effects. This is very much powerful against vata-dominated conditions, such as arthritis, piles and constipation.

4. Nasya:

Nasya

The Nasya treatment is effective in curing any ailment in the head area. At first, the head and shoulder areas are lightly massaged and fomented. Then, nasal drops are poured in both the nostrils. This aids cleaning of the whole head area and diminishes different sorts of cerebral pain, headache, hair issues, sleep disorder, neurological disorders, sinusitis , chronic rhinitis and other respiratory ailments.

5. Raktamokshan:

The treatment helps in blood purification and other viable diseases caused due of impure blood. It can be done locally or for the whole body. This treatment is especially valued for different skin infections, like psoriasis, dermatitis, and further more in local lesions such as abscesses and pigmentation.
